We are learning to think like scientists. This means we share what we wonder, we talk about what we see and we try and make connections between things we know about or things we have done.
On Friday we did an experiment called 'Dancing Raisins'. We put raisins into soda water and watched what happened.
What do you see? What else do you notice?
"I saw the raisins sink when they had lots of bubbles on them and then when some of the bubbles popped, the raisins went up" Vincent
"When we took the raisin out, it did it again" Bonnie
"The more they bounced up and down, the more the bubbles attached on the raisin. The more the raisins went down, the less bubbles they had" Lachlan
- "I saw the raisins go up and down, and then stay down for a little bit" Henessy
- " The raisins went up and down. Some stayed down." Harley
- "I saw the raisins go up and down. Only one went up and then it went down." Mason
- "I saw the big raisin had lots of bubbles but it still didn't float up. But the little ones always went down when all of the bubbles were off." Maisy
"I saw the raisins make infinite bubbles" Logan
"I smelt the bubbles and when the raisins went in, it smelt different" Johnny
"I think the raisins suck up the bubbles but they can't get out so they push the raisin up. Keiva
What might that mean?
"The soda water bubble went up and down so the raisins did too." Johnny
"It's maybe because when we drop the raisins in they might have little holes in them and they might suck up the bubbles from the soda water." - Logan
"Because the raisins have little holes in them and when it went in the bubbles it makes more bubbles." Vincent
Do you think other things would go up and down too? What? Why?
"Lavender might go up and down too. Because it might soak up the bubble too." Bonnie
"Hay and grass and flowers might go in and swirl around." Lachlan
"Other small foods might do that too, foods that might have parts for the bubbles to cling on to." Jonas
We could try:
- Grapes
- Orange crackers
- Mentos
- Marshmallow
- M&Ms
- Peas
- A pompom
We will try some of these ideas next week to see if our predictions are right!
