From garden to plate

Today we went to the garden to plant some vegetable seedlings.

This is an interesting garden. A couple of years ago we filled this concrete tub with paper plates and utensils that came from our food festival. We put some earth on top and left it to compost.
Now look! Amazing big leafy vegetables!

We picked some vegetables and took them back to make a salad for lunch.

Mmm. Delicious!

Circuits

 In 'Bubble School' the senior bubble has been experimenting with making electrical circuits using playdough.

Each pair of learners made a playdough creature, then devised a circuit to light up its eyes (or ears). When the eyes lit up there was a high pitched sound to show the circuit worked. Here are some pictures of the pairs of children working:

Ms Jones is working with the Level 3 bubble kids at school.

Today a young thrush flew into the window in Room 9 and it died. We have been sketching it. 

We can draw the whole bird or just parts.

We look closely at the details to enhance our drawing.

Week Two Term 4

I hope you all had a relaxing Labour Weekend.

For those who cannot get onto Seesaw to get to the activities we have been sharing, here are some ideas for keeping yourselves learning and stimulated at home:

Make some playdough.

Here's my tried and true recipe:

2 cups flour                1 cup salt

2 tablespoons of cream of tarter

1 tablespoon of oil

2 cups boiling water

Food colouring (add after water)

Mix together and knead.

keeps indefinitely if stored in an airtight container.

Write a story everyday.

Here are some topics to get you enthusiastic and to start a conversation about the story. If the story is a good one, you might want to add a bit to it each day and then put it all together in a book to share when we get back to school!

Would you rather be invisible or be able to fly?

If I won a million dollars I would ....

I was digging in my garden and my spade hit something hard. I cleared away the dirt and there was .....

Make a miniature world outside in the garden. 

Find a little corner and create a city or a farm. Make buildings and fences and roads from things you can find - stones and sticks and bark and flowers.

Make a print.

If you have some cardboard from a cereal box or similar, you can make a cool print:

You will need: scissors, card, glue, paint, paper.

Cut out some shapes from the card and glue them onto a big piece of card. 

When the glue has dried, use a brush or an old toothbrush to spread paint over the card.

Put a piece of paper on top of the card and use a bottle or rolling pin to roll over the back of the paper to press the paint into the surface of the card print. 

Peel off the paper and voila! See the results.

You can make several prints, and add different colours.

You can also make a print using a potato. Cut a spud in half and carve a shape into the flat surface, apply paint and then print onto a piece of paper, like a stamp.

Printmaking update

Here is day two's results of the printmaking we began yesterday. 

 

Level 3

 Kia ora! Here we are again.

I am enjoying looking at your Seesaw activities. Excellent work those of you who are able to access it.

Here at school, the children of essential workers are working on a printmaking project.

First we went out and sketched the resource room.

Now we are working on turning that sketch into a print.
We cut and glue pieces of card onto card.

Here is an example of a print that has already been done using the same relief printing method.

Tomorrow I will post the printed versions of ours.
